Best area to stay in Ho Chi Minh City

The best area to stay in Ho Chi Minh City is the one closest to what you plan to do. Most first visits centre on the former District 1, where the Reunification Palace stands. Others choose District 3, which is close to the War Remnants Museum, or Thao Dien, a different part of the city.

There is no objective ranking of areas for noise, safety or price, and this page does not give one. It describes where the sights are and how the names have changed, so you can read a map and judge for yourself. If you want a guided day after you arrive, look at the Ho Chi Minh City tours.

For most first visits, a base in the former District 1 keeps the palace, the markets and the museum within reach. Check the real distance on a map for each property, because the table does not measure walking time.

District 1, Pham Ngu Lao, District 3 and Thao Dien

What the old names mean on a map.

District 1 (Quận 1)

District 1 was the central district. Since 2025 it has been divided into new wards, among them Sài Gòn, Tân Định, Bến Thành and Cầu Ông Lãnh. Bến Nghé and part of Đa Kao are in Sài Gòn ward. Visitors still say District 1, so listings and maps still use it. See the District 1 page for the sights.

Pham Ngu Lao

The Pham Ngu Lao area is now part of Bến Thành ward. It is the area of the Bui Vien walking street. If you search for hotels in Pham Ngu Lao, expect evening activity nearby, and read the nightlife page for the hours.

District 3 (Quận 3)

District 3 has new ward names such as Bàn Cờ, Xuân Hòa and Nhiêu Lộc. The War Remnants Museum stands in Xuân Hòa.

Thao Dien (Thảo Điền)

Thao Dien is a place name that people still use. It is not an exact administrative unit today, because it is part of the ward An Khánh together with Thủ Thiêm and other areas. Do not expect a listing to say District 2.

What to check before you book

Practical points for any area.

Registration at check-in

Foreign guests must be reported to the local police, and hotels usually do this at check-in. They ask for your passport details. The report is due within 24 hours, and a hotel is not required by law to keep your passport.

Distance from the sights

Look up the walking route on a map, not only the district name. A listing in District 1 can still be some distance from the palace or the markets.

The airport route

Tân Sơn Nhất Airport is in the city. Read the airport page for the bus, taxi and transfer options, and for the terminal check.

Metro Line 1

Metro Line 1 runs from Bến Thành to Suối Tiên and opened in December 2024. If a stay is close to Bến Thành station, it can be a useful link.

Staying on the coast instead

If your trip is a beach holiday, the island of Phú Quốc is about one hour by plane from Tân Sơn Nhất. See where to stay in Phu Quoc.
